A fridge freezer that trips the breaker repeatedly has a fault that is drawing excessive current or creating an earth fault. Do not keep resetting the breaker and continuing to use it.

Common Causes

Compressor Winding Fault

A failing compressor can develop an earth fault that trips the RCD. Compressor replacement or appliance replacement may be required.

Defrost Heater Fault

Frost-free models have a heater that melts ice from the evaporator coil. If the heater insulation breaks down it can trip the RCD. Replacement cost: £80–£150.

Wiring or PCB Fault

Water ingress or age can cause wiring or the control board to develop a fault. An engineer can isolate which component is causing the trip.
